Ghana has produced a lot of versatile actors in the Movie Industry and in this article, we will delve into the life of one of these versatile actors, John Dumelo, his early life, acting career, award nominations, number of awards he has won, some of the movies he has starred in and other relevant information about him.

The actor, John Dumelo was born on February 3, 1984, to Mr John Dumelo and Mrs Antoinette Dumelo and he is the last and only boy of three children.

John Dumelo started and completed his Primary and Junior Secondary Education at the Christ the King International school and that is where his acting career began after he was selected by GAMA Film Company to play the role as a pupil in the movie titled “Baby Thieve”.

He then continued to Achimota Senior Secondary School and after a successful completion studied Civil Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

John Dumelo was then featured in popular television series, “SunCity” and “About To Wed” and the much-talked-about movie which put him in the limelight was “The king is mine” where he played the role of a King in 2008 which featured top actresses such as Yvonne Nelson and Jackie Appiah.

John Dumelo’s acting career is one we can describe as “fruitful and fulfilled” judging from the number of movies he has acted in both Ghana and Nigeria since he came into the limelight in 2008.

The 35-year-old actor has acted in about 90 movies and below are some of the movies he has acted;

4Play, Hearts of Men, Queens Pride, Queen’s pride, Hunted house, Letters to my mother, Love or something like that, To love a Prince, The Maidens, The Prince bride, Snake boy, The Game, The Supremo, Tide that binds, Single, Married and Complicated, Secret Shadows, Single Six and a host of them.

John Dumelo in his acting career can boast several nominations and winning numerous prestigious awards in both local and international movie awards schemes.

Below are some nominations and awards won by Ghanaian actor John Dumelo;

In 2010, he was nominated in Best Nollywood Awards in the category, “Best Actor in a lead role” in the movie “The Maidens” and also got nominated in African Movie Awards Academy in the category “Most Promising Actor” in the movie “Heart of Men”.

In the year 2011, he won “African Most Outstanding Actor” at the Afro Australia Movies and Music Awards. In the same year, he again got nominated at the African Movie Academy Awards in the category “Best Actor in a supporting role” for the movie “A Private Storm”.

He got nominated in the category “Best Actor in a lead role” for the movie “Queen Latifa” at the 2012 Ghana Movie Awards.

John Dumelo went all out and won in the category “Best Actor in a lead role” for the movie “Northern Affair” at the 2013 Ghana Movie Awards.

Four years after winning “Best Actor in a lead role” for the movie “Northern Affair” at the 2013 Ghana Movie Awards, John Dumelo was nominated in the category “Best actor West Africa” at the 2017 Pan African Film and Television of Ouagadougou (FESPACO) for the same movie “Northern Affair” and won it.

Aside from being recognised as an actor, John Dumelo is also known to be an Entrepreneur and he is into crop and farming.

John Dumelo in the 2016 Parliamentary and Presidential elections declared his support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and has since been actively involved in politics of Ghana.

John Dumelo in the wake of the demise of the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko in 2018 made his intentions known to contest for the seat but later rescinded his decision over reasons best known to him.

John Dumelo on May 12, 2018, tied the knot with Gifty Mawuenya in a colourful traditional ceremony where his colleague celebrities and NDC gurus graced the ceremony and six months later, his wife, Gifty Mawuenya gave birth to a bouncy baby boy named, Dumelo Junior.

Fast-forwarding to May 11, 2019, John Dumelo walked down the aisle with his wife, Gifty Mawuenya at the Royal Senchi Hotel.

On his political journey to becoming the President of Ghana someday, he picked a nomination form to be voted as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate to contest for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency seat.

The National Democratic Congress’ 2019 Parliamentary election came off Saturday, August 24, 2019, and fortunately, he was declared as the winner of the NDC’s Parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.

John Dumelo won the primaries with 758 votes while his opponent, Madam Adoboe got 99 votes out of the 859 total valid votes.

John Dumelo on 7th December 2020, will contest and battle it out with the incumbent Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, NPP’s Madam Lydia Alhassan.
